Different approaches to targeting tumor hypoxia. Several, in part complementary pharmaceutical and radiotherapeutical approaches have been developed since the identification of hypoxia as major resistance factor for successful radiotherapy, including pharmaceutical agents that directly target hypoxic tumor cells and the tumor vasculature, and strategies that modify oxygen delivery to hypoxic tumor areas. In addition to iterative reoxygenation as part of low dose fractionated radiotherapy regimes, improved treatment planning coupled with hypoxia-specific imaging results in novel radiotherapy treatment delivery with highest dose conformity.
